Reye's syndrome

Reye's syndrome, rare disease that attacks the liver and central nervous system of children age 4–15. Of unknown cause, it is contracted by most victims following a viral illness, such as chicken pox or the flu. Aspirin use may be associated with the syndrome. Symptoms include vomiting and may progress into convulsions, disorientation, and possible brain damage and comas. Treatment is with glucose and other nutrients or with drugs and surgery when pressure within the skull reaches dangerous levels. About 3–5% of victims die. Named (1963) after Australian pathologist R.D.K. Reye, who researched it.
