Retailing

Retailing, selling of merchandise or services to the public. When a business sells at retail prices, that means it buys its goods or services from a supplier, usually a wholesaler, or directly from the factory. The business then sells the goods to consumers at a higher price designed to make a profit for the business. Specialty stores sell particular types of product and accessories, such as shoes, clothes, jewelry, or books. Department stores offer a wide variety of items in separate areas (departments) of the store. Discount stores sell their inventory at prices below normal retail prices. Supermarkets sell food and other household products. Chain stores are those under the same name or ownership in 2 or more locations. Nonstore retailing involves selling goods by mail order, telephone, vending machines, and door-to-door methods.
