Reims



Reims, or Rheims (pop. 185,100), city in northern France, about 100 mi (161 km) east of Paris on the Besle River. Dating from Roman times, it is famed for its Gothic cathedral (built 1211–1430). All but two French kings were crowned in Reims (1179–1825). Center of champagne and woolen production, it also produces chemicals, machinery, and paper.
