Regeneration

Regeneration, in biology, regrowing of a lost or damaged part of an organism. In plants this includes the production, for instance of dormant buds and adventitious organs. All animals possess some power to regenerate, but its extent varies from that in sponges, in which all the cells in a piece of the body, almost completely separated, will come together to build up new but smaller sponges, to that in the higher animals, in which regeneration is limited to the healing of wounds.
