Ray



Ray, any of a group of more than 400 species of flat-bodied marine fish (order Rajiformes) with a boneless skeleton made from a tough, elastic substance called cartilage. Rays resemble sharks in having gill slits, but under the pectoral fins. Most ray slive on the sea floor and feed on smaller species. Ray seggs are fertilized and hatched inside the female. The largest rays are the mantas, which may grow to 22 ft (7 m) wide and weigh up to 3,000 lbs (1,360 kg).
