R, 18th letter of the English alphabet, corresponding to the Semitic letter resh, meaning “head,” and represented by a sign based on an ancient Egyptian picture symbol for a human head. R is rho in the Greek alphabet and the 17th letter of the Roman alphabet. The present form of the capital R comes from classical Latin, the small r from Carolingian script.
