Qumran



Qumran, village on the northwestern shore of the Dead Sea, on the West Bank of Jordan, near the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found (1947). Built by Essenes (130–110 B.C.), it was destroyed by an earthquake (31 B.C.), rebuilt, and destroyed again by the Romans (A.D. 68).
