Quebec separatist movement

Quebec separatist movement, various French-Canadian political factions in Quebec, Canada, which demand that French be the sole language of Quebec and that Quebec separate from Canadian rule and become an independent nation. The movement, begun in the early 1960s as the Quiet Revolution, and furthered by legislator René Lévesque and his Parti Québécois, stemmed from anger with British-centered policies, and governmental discrimination against French-speaking peoples. Despite the terrorist tactics of some groups, the separatist movement is growing in popularity. Nevertheless a popular referendum held in 1995 indicated that a majority of the electorate was against separation from Canada.
