Quebec



Quebec (pop. 645,500), capital of Quebec province, situated on the St. Lawrence River. Founded in 1608 by Samuel de Champlain, it is Canada's oldest city. Despite British dominance since 1759, Quebec has remained essentially French, and more than 90% of its citizens claim French ancestry. Today it is a leading manufacturing center and transatlantic port. Industries include shipbuilding, paper milling, food processing, machinery, and textiles.
