Quadruple Alliance



Quadruple Alliance, alliance of 4 countries. Historically, the most famous are (1) alliance among Britain, France, Austria, and the Netherlands (1718) to prevent Spain from changing the terms of the Peace of Utrecht (Spain later joined the alliance), (2) alliance among Britain, Austria, Russia, and Prussia (signed 1814, renewed 1815) to defeat Napoleon and, after his defeat and first abdication, to ensure that France abided by the terms of the 1815 Treaty of Paris, and (3) alliance among Britain, France, Portugal, and Spain (1834), supporting Queen Isabella II of Spain.
