Punjab



Punjab (Sanskrit, “five rivers”), large wheat-growing region in the northwest of the Indian subcontinent, on the upper Indus River plain. Formerly the British Indian province of Punjab, it was divided in 1947 into what became known as Punjab (Pakistan) and Punjab (India). In 1966 Punjab (India) was divided into two further provinces, Punjab and Haryana.
