Public lands

Public lands, land areas owned by the U.S. government, especially those it sells or leases to individuals. The government uses public lands for parks, forests, cemeteries, wildlife refuges, federal buildings, and defense installations. Congress determines how to use or dispose of public lands; the Bureau of Land Management in the Department of the Interior administers public lands. About 762 million acres (308 million hectares) are public lands.
