Psychiatry



Psychiatry, field of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of mental disorders, including neurosis and psychosis. Its major branches are psychotherapy, the application of psychological techniques to the treatment of mental illness where a physiological origin is either unknown or does not exist; and medical therapy, where attack is made either on the organic source of the disease or on its physical or behavioral symptoms.
