Przewalski's horse

Przewalski's horse, or Eastern wild horse, last remaining race of true wild horses. Of the three subspecies of Equus przewalskii, two—the steppe tarpan and forest tarpan—were exterminated by the middle of the 19th century. Only Przewalski's horse remained, undiscovered until 1881. Ancestors of domestic horses, they are about the size of a pony, yellow or red-brown, and with an erect mane. It is probable that they, too, are now extinct in the wild. Today it is an endangered species with less than 200 animals living in zoos and fewer than 50 living in the wild.
