Proofreading

Proofreading, reading and correcting of printed matter prior to publication. It is done by skilled proofreaders using universally understood marks and symbols on the copy itself to indicate what corrections need to be made on the final draft. Newspapers, magazines, and printing shops employ proofreaders to check over all copy before it is published, in an effort to eliminate or minimize errors that might appear in print. Book publishing companies also use proofreaders, who mark up authors' original manuscripts as well as typeset copy (galley proofs) before they appear in book form.
