Privateer

Privateer armed vessel that was privately owned but commissioned by a government to prey upon enemy ships in wartime. Privateers thus often supplemented a nation's navy. The practice of privateering was outlawed (1856) by the Declaration of Paris, but the United States refused to sign it, and privateers operated during the U.S. Civil War. The practice has been abandoned by all nations.
