Price, Leontyne (1927- ), U.S. soprano. Her first success was as Bess in Gershwin's Porgy and Bess (1952–54). She made debuts in televised operas (1955), at the San Francisco Opera (1957), and at the New York Metropolitan Opera (1961), winning international fame for her performances in works by Verdi and Puccini. She retired from opera in 1985 but continues as a recitalist.
