Presley, Elvis (1935–77), U.S. singer, first major rock star, and present-day cult hero. From 1956 to the mid-1960s, Presley's versions of rhythm-and-blues songs (“Hound Dog”) and ballads (“Love Me Tender”) were instant hits, as were his 33 films. His Memphis, Tenn., home, Graceland, became a shrine for his many fans.
