Praetorian Guard



Praetorian Guard, elite household troops of the Roman emperors, consisting of 9 (later 10) cohorts of 1,000 foot soldiers with higher rank and pay than ordinary troops. Instituted by Augustus in 2 B.C., they assumed enough power to overthrow emperors. Constantine disbanded them in 312.
