Potlatch

Potlatch, in many tribal cultures, especially among the Native Americans of the Northwest Coast, an elaborate ceremonial feast at which the host distributes or destroys his own wealth to gain status or office in his tribe. Wealthier guests are expected in turn to match or exceed this in future potlatches. Although banned for a while in Canada, the potlatch is still an important tribal institution.
