Potato



Potato (Solarium tuberosum), herbaceous plant of the nightshade family, with an edible, fleshy, tuberous, underground stem. It originated in the South American Andes. The tubers became a popular European foodstuff in the 18th century, the Irish in particular becoming dependent on the high-carbohydrate crop.
