Portsmouth



Portsmouth (pop. 26,254), New Hampshire, major seaport on the state's Atlantic coast. Founded in the early 1600s at the mouth of the Piscataqua River, Portsmouth is the site of an important naval shipyard and Air Force base. It is the oldest settlement in New Hampshire and the site of its first capital. The Treaty of Portsmouth, ending the Russo-Japanese War, was signed at the naval base in 1905.
