Portobelo

Portobelo (pop. 550), village in Panama. Named by Columbus in 1502 and founded as a Caribbean shipping port, Portobelo was often the starting point for Spanish treasure ships bound for Spain from its New World colonies. Repeated attacks by English pirates in the 17th and 18th centuries destroyed much of the town and its importance declined after the opening of the Panama Railroad in the 1850s.
