Pontus

Pontus, ancient kingdom in northeastern Asia Minor by the Black Sea. Dating from the 4th century B.C., it reached its height under Mithridates VI, who was, however, defeated by the Roman general Pompey in 65 B.C. Pontus was annexed by the Roman Empire in 9 B.C. after it had challenged Roman power.
