Pontiac



Pontiac (pop. 76,715), city in southeastern Michigan. It lies on the Clinton River. Pontiac was founded in 1818 and became a city in 1861. In its early days, Pontiac was a leading manufacturing center of wagons and carriages. That developed into automobile manufacturing, which is still its major industry. Its plants produce many cars, trucks, and buses annually. Pontiac is situated on wooded hills and has many lakes and parks nearby. It was named for Pontiac, a Native American chief believed to be buried in the area.
