Rosa Melba Ponselle



Ponselle, Rosa Melba (1897–1981), U.S. soprano, born Rosa Ponzillo. She sang in vaudeville before her sensational Metropolitan Opera debut in 1918 opposite Enrico Caruso in Verdi's La Forza del Destino. Until retiring in 1936, she was one of the company's leading dramatic sopranos.
