Georges Jean Raymond Pompidou



Pompidou, Georges Jean Raymond (1911–74), president of France from 1969 to 1974. He was a literature professor before he began his political career in 1944 as an aide to Charles De Gaulle. De Gaulle was at that time a general and head of a temporary government. Pompidou's subsequent political career consisted of various posts in connection with De Gaulle. De Gaulle was elected president in 1958. When he resigned his presidency, Pompidou was elected to take his place. As president, Pompidou strove to better France's economy.
