Polymerization

Polymerization, chemical process in which many small molecules, called monomers, are joined together to produce a large molecule, called a polymer. The monomers combined can be all of one kind or of many different kinds. The characteristic of the polymer is determined by what monomers are combined. Some polymers, such as starch and rubber, are found in nature; others, like plastic and paint, are synthetically produced.
