Leonidas Polk



Polk, Leonidas (1806–64), first bishop of Louisiana (1841–61). He abandoned the ministry to fight in the Confederate Army in the Civil War. He served as a major general in the Army of Tennessee and fought at Shiloh, Murfreesboro, and Chickamauga before being killed in action at Pine Mountain, Ga.
