Pokeweed



Pokeweed (Phytolacca americana), tall, herbal plant belonging to the pokeweed family. Native to North America, it is also known as poke, pigeonberry, pokeberry, pokeroot, and inkberry. Pokeweed has small white flowers and berries that ripen to a deep red-black color. Its stem is red and grows to a height of 4 to 10 ft (1.2 to 3 m). The root, stem, leaves, and seeds of the pokeweed are poisonous, but its young shoots can be eaten if properly prepared.
