Pohnpei



Pohnpei, island in the western Pacific Ocean. The largest of the eastern Caroline Islands, Pohnpei has an area of approximately 129 sq mi (334 sq km). Many tropical crops are raised there, including yams, bananas, taros, and breadfruit. It has been controlled successively by Spain, Germany, Japan, and the United States. Pohnpei and the other Caroline Islands currently make up the self-governing Federated States of Micronesia.
