Plzen



Plzen (pop. 173,000), city in Bohemia, a western region of Czech Republic. Situated at the junction of the Radbuzza and Me rivers. Plzen is a leading industrial, economic, and cultural center. Skoda Works, a factory noted for its production of military aircraft, automobiles, machinery, and locomotives, operates there. Its other products include paper products, chemicals, and metal hardwares. Pilsner, a world-renowned beer, has been brewed there since the Middle Ages. Founded before the 10th century, Plzen was a Roman Catholic stronghold during the religious wars of the 15th century. Its town square dates back to medieval times.
