Ploiesti (pop. 252,100), large city in southeastern Romania, center of the Romanian oil industry. One of the world's first oil refineries started operations there in 1856. Besides refining and storing oil, Ploiesti produces oil-mining equipment as well as chemicals derived from petroleum. Other industries include textile manufacturing and food processing.
