Plateau

Plateau, high plain. A plateau is formed by the erosion of lands bordering it, a build-up of recurrent lava flows, or the earth's upward movements. Heights of plateaus vary. Lower altitude plateaus, such as some in Australia and the U.S., can be valuable to people because they are often excellent grazing lands for livestock. High altitude plateaus, such as those in the Himalayas, have climates not suitable for human habitation.
