Pigeon



Pigeon, name for family (Columbidae) of some 255 species of birds, with worldwide distribution. The typical pigeon is pastel gray, pink, or brown with contrasting patches of brighter colors. The body is compact, the neck short, and the head and bill fairly small. Most species are gregarious, and many are seen in very large flocks. The food may be stored in a distensible crop. The name dove is synonymous with pigeon.
