Pictography

Pictography, writing by means of pictures, particularly ancient methods of using actual pictures as symbols. Many alphabetic symbols have been simplified from such pictures, over the course of time. For instance, our letter A, which developed from the Greek alpha and the Hebrew aleph, was adapted from a pictograph showing the horns of an ox.
