Phonetics



Phonetics, systematic examination of the sounds made in speech, concerned with the classification of these sounds, the physical and physiological aspects of their production and transmission, and their reception and interpretation by the listener. Phonology, the study of phonetic patterns in languages, is of importance in comparative linguistics.
