Philadelphia



Philadelphia, name of several ancient Greek cities. One, founded in the 2nd century B.C., was in Amman, now the capital of Jordan. It was renamed Philadelphia in the 3rd century B.C. by Ptolemy II, one of the successors of Alexander the Great. The name is Greek for “brotherly love.”
