Pequot

Pequot, Native Americans of the Algonquian language group who lived in southern New England. Their murder of a colonial trader by whom they had been mistreated led to the Pequot War (1637), the first major European massacre of Native Americans in North America, in which almost the entire tribe was slaughtered or enslaved. The Pequot were resettled (1655) on a Connecticut reservation.
