Sir William Pepperell



Pepperell, Sir William (1696–1759), American colonial leader and soldier who, backed by a British fleet, conquered (1745) the reputedly impregnable French fortress of Louisburg in Cape Breton, Canada, during the French and Indian Wars. He was the first American to be created baronet.
