Pensacola



Pensacola (pop. 344,406), city, northwest Florida, seat of Escambia County, seaport on Pensacola Bay of the Gulf of Mexico. Pensacola was settled by Spain (1559), though not continuously inhabited, and belonged at various times to Spain or England before being purchased by the United States (1821). It is the site of the U.S. Naval Air Training Station and the University of West Florida. Pensacola manufactures wood and paper products and chemicals.
