Peat



Peat, partially decayed plant material found in layers, usually in marshy areas. It is composed mainly of the peat mosses sphagnum and hypnum, but also of sedges, tress, etc. Under the right geological conditions, peat forms coal. It is used as a mulch and burned for domestic heating.
