James Kirke Paulding



Paulding, James Kirke (1778–1860), U.S. writer and public official. He satirized British colonialism in works like John Bull in America (1925) and did much to encourage the development of distinctively American literature. His novels include Westward Ho! (1832). He served as secretary of the navy (1838–41).
