Patagonia, dry plateau of about 300,000 sq mi (777,000 sq km) in southern Argentina, between the Andes Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean. Sheep-raising is the main activity of the few inhabitants. There are oil, iron ore, and coal deposits, as well as other untapped mineral resources.
