Passenger pigeon



Passenger pigeon, extinct bird (Ectopistes migratorius) of the pigeon family, extremely common until the 19th century throughout most of North America. Highly gregarious and social birds that migrated in huge flocks, passenger pigeons fed on invertebrates, fruits, and grain, often doing extensive damage to crops. Hunted both as pests and for food, they became extinct.
