Parlement

Parlement, French high court of justice in Paris that operated from the Middle Ages until 1789. It had some political influence through its power of questioning the king's edicts. Membership became a hereditary privilege. There were also 12 provincial parlements. Deemed reactionary and exclusive, they were swept away in the French Revolution.
