University of Paris

Paris, University of, France's renowned institution of higher learning. Growing out of the medieval cathedral schools of Notre Dame, it has granted master's degrees since 1170. The Sorbonne (founded 1253) became its single most famous college. Reconstituted during the Napoleonic era as a modern university, it was reorganized again in 1970 into 13 autonomous units.
