Papyrus

Papyrus, stout, reedlike plant (Cyperus papyrus) of the sedge family widely used in ancient Egypt. Sails, baskets, sandals, and clothing were made from the stem, as was a material for writing on (a predecessor of paper). The pith was eaten, and the roots were used as fuel.
