Paleography

Paleography, the study of handwritten material from the ancient and medieval times. It deals with writing on papyrus, parchment, paper, and other perishable materials, as opposed to epigraphy, which deals with writing on metal or stone. Paleographers study handwriting to interpret and date events and to trace the evolution of the written alphabet.
