P

P, 16th letter of the English alphabet, corresponding with the letter pe of the Semitic alphabet, which was represented by a diamond-shaped symbol based on the Egyptian hieroglyph for “mouth.” The Greeks adopted the letter as pi, and it took its modern form in Latin. As an abbreviation it represents phosphorus in chemistry, pence and peso in currency, and piano (Italian for “softly”) in music.
